The Station Fire

It looks like the Mt. Wilson transmitter sites and observatory have dodged a bullet. The best source for updates about the fate of the structures on Mt. Wilson has been from the folks who operate the observatories. The Mount Wilson Observatory web site that was hosted on a server on the mountain has temporarily been moved to a Georgia State University server here: http://www.chara.gsu.edu/CHARA/fire.php. Their last posting about half an hour ago was extremely optimistic.

Here is a live feed of the fire from CBS. If the video is black or there are color bars, the helicopter is likely refueling. Check back in a bit.

The Earth

Those of you who have Dish Network may have already discovered this. Dish has put up a video feed of the Earth as seen from their Echostar 11 satellite at an orbital position of 110°. It's not really live video but a series of still images updated about every 15 seconds. If you have Dish Network, you can find the feed on channel 212. Click here for a YouTube video of 24 hour sequence from this camera. Near the end of the video you can see the moon passing behind the Earth. Something about seeing a "live" image of Earth from space is simply fascinating.

Rumors about the CDMA version of the BlackBerry Bold (code named Niagara) continue to swirl about the net. Several sources have said that this device will be released by Sprint as early as this quarter. This device sounds incredible. Lets just hope the rumors are true.

The Large Hadron Collider

Scientist began testing the Large Hadron Collider today. Some experts believe that when they begin crashing particles together at nearly the speed of light sometime in December, that a black hole could be formed that could swallow the Earth. Google paid tribute to this occasion today by depicting their logo being sucked into a Large Hadron induced black hole. Here is a funny blog about this:

Here's a Spillers planting tip from the Flat Bottom Flowers blog:

In my last post, I talked about the "recipe" that I keep in mind when planting a mixed container or when arranging a grouping of pots. To be visually appealing, one would need a dramatic, preferably tall focal point, a plant (or plants) that trail or spill and then several plants that go in between to fill the empty spaces. So I thought I might make some suggestions for plants that would be appropriate for each category. In this post, I'll address spillers.

My all-time favorite I-would-die-if-it-ever-went-out-of-existence spiller is (say it with me) Creeping Jenny (also known as Lysimachia nummularia). Shown here, it's hardy to zone 3 so it comes back every year in my containers, it's a rapid grower and starts tumbling over the edges of my pots by mid-June. It seems to do well no matter where I put it on my deck whether it's in full sun or shaded by the leaves of my Japanese Maple. It takes all I have not to put it in every single one of my pots.

Ron Paul - Spillers Doc, Presidential Candidate

(8/11/07) - Long before he was Ron Paul, presidential candidate or Ron Paul, cable show hero. He was just Ron Paul, the neighborly doctor from Lake Jackson.

"I told my daughter, he delivered you and now he might be president," said Cherish Spillers.
Which is not a surprise to many of his former patients. Paul delivered more than 4,000 of Brazoria County's babies before and while he was a US Congressman representing the area.

"We always knew he had the potential," said Evelyn Brandenberg.

But Paul himself may not have known. He is a man, who despite 20 years in Congress, has a pretty low profile. Prompting even some of his supporters to ask - who is Ron Paul?

To their and Paul's own amusement, a lot of voters are taking the time to find out.
"To my surprise there were a lot of people thinking the same way I've been thinking," Paul said.
Which is, as Paul puts it, fiercely constitutional.

He opposes the United Nations but also wants to abolish the Departments of Education, Homeland Security, FEMA, NATO, NAFTA and income taxes. "My position is repeal the 16th Amendment and get rid of the IRS," he said.

He is wildly popular among his supporters which are a pretty eclectic bunch.
"I believe he's the only one who can save us now," said supporter Brandy Junk.

'Is that a monkey in your ponytail?'

NEW YORK (CNN) -- Passengers aboard Spirit Airlines Flight 180 from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to New York's LaGuardia International Airport had an unexpected travel companion Wednesday: a small monkey. A passenger who originally departed from Lima, Peru, and connected in Fort Lauderdale had been hiding the small monkey in his ponytail, under his hat, according to Spirit Airlines spokeswoman Alison Russell. During the flight, the monkey crawled out of its hiding spot, forcing the owner to hold it in his hands, where the unexpected visitor was soon spotted by fellow passengers and crew members, Russell said. The Port Authority Police Department was contacted by Spirit Airlines, and officials met the owner and the monkey at the gate. Port Authority spokesman Pasquale DiFulco released a statement saying the monkey was never loose in the airport, as originally reported. "We've contacted health officials, and man and monkey will be turned over to appropriate officials. He was never on the loose in the airport," DiFulco said

Lunch Lady Land

Every day for more than 20 years, students at Palm River Elementary School in Tampa, Florida got their breakfast and lunch from Susie Spiller.

Mrs. Spiller died June 15, 2007, a few days shy of her 94th birthday. From 1960 until 1981, she had been a server at the school's cafeteria.

Mississippi Braves Manager goes crazy

If you didn't catch this on the news this past weekend, take a look. Phillip Wellman, the manager of the AA Mississippi Braves completely lost it. Apparently Phillip thought that the umpire had too big of a strike zone, so after being ejected, he re-sized home plate, stole a couple of bases and made a commando style grenade attack on the home plate umpire.

Big Kids was a children's television show that originally aired on the BBC in 2000 from September 27 to December 20. Eberhard Spiller - Captain and German Air attaché in Oslo. Took command over a company of Fallschirmjegers on April 9th, 1940 and launched the famous "Spillers raid". A fruitless hunt through over 100 km of Norwegian held territory for the Norwegian King and government. He was mortally wounded in the battle of Midtskogen, on the night between 9th and 10th of April.

Spillers Farm - Located in the Devonshire countryside, the farm's tea room is famous for its Cream Teas and home-made cakes.

Spillers & Co. Ltd. - Founded in 1880 by Joel Spiller & Samuel Browne, Spillers operated some of the largest grain mills in the UK. The company imported Wheat from India, Australia, America and Russia in their own ships.
